What differentiates EAB Starfish from other similar products?
Starfish allows everyone involved in a student's college success to stay in the loop. When a professor sends a student an early alert, the student's advisor automatically gets copied in and can reach out to the student for help. Starfish also allows professors to highlight specific areas of weakness so students know exactly what they are doing wrong. Starfish also allows professors to make recommendations and referrals to resources on campus that can help students be successful.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
My favorite aspect of this product is the early alert system. I've worked in higher education as both an instructor and an administrator. I've often found that my students don't know or don't realize they are failing a course. Starfish allows students to recognize their poor performance in a course and make improvements before it's too late. As an instructor, I found that my students were very responsive and immediately contacted me, began turning in work, and showing up for class when they received an early alert. I also like that Starfish makes it easy to refer students to resources on campus and keeps their advisor in the loop.
What do you dislike most about this product?
I don't love that it's called "Starfish." I wish you could customize the program a bit more to fit with your schools mascot/theme. While Starfish is very easy to use, some of the faculty at my school that were not very tech savvy needed extensive, hands on training from me to be able to use the product, which was very time intensive.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
If you want a product to help with student retention and provide you with data that is easy to analyze, Starfish can help you. I've utilized Starfish at a competitive four year private school and at a local community college, and in both of those settings, students and faculty found Starfish was very beneficial. Faculty can email students to let them know they are failing, tell them face to face, post grades on Blackboard, etc., but something about receiving that "early alert" from Starfish seems to motivate students to turn it around.
