Microsoft Project is considered more complex than most tools, which can be a con for casual users but a pro for project professionals needing detailed control. It’s often used in industries like construction, engineering, and government that require strict project controls.

MS Project's Excellency for Structured Planning

What differentiates Microsoft Project from other similar products?

Microsoft Project has a lot of features that make it unique in its own way. However, based on my experience with the software, I would say it's distinct because of its "granularity." Trello and Asana are great for everyday workflow. But MS Project gives you hard control over time, cost, workload, dependencies, and risk. So, users are basically creating a blueprint for their entire project.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

My utmost love will go to the "control and depth." When I was managing a full-quarter content campaign (involving designers, editors, and two social platforms), MS Project gave me a bird’s-eye view of everything... who was working on what, when tasks overlapped, and what was falling behind.

What do you dislike most about this product?

MS Project is actually cool, but it's not beginner-friendly at all. So, I would say that's one thing I "dislike" in that sense. The first time I opened Microsoft Project, I closed it back in under 10 minutes. The interface is very “corporate,” there’s a learning curve, and if you’re a solo VA or creator, it can feel way too heavy.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

For freelancers, small team, or creatives, I would advise them to skip it... because it's too rigid and overbuilt. But for those working with corporate clients or executive-level stakeholders who love detailed timelines and formal planning tools, learning, MS Project will give them an edge. Also, users can consider taking a short course or YouTube crash series... it’ll save them frustration. Most importantly, users should only use it when they're managing projects that truly need tight scheduling, tracking, and reporting.
