Jira made design managing easier.

What differentiates Jira from other similar products?

To be honest, I didn’t like Jira when I first started using it. I came from a design background, so it was just another system that always needed updating. I altered my view after working on larger corporate products. When designers, developers, QA engineers and product managers all work on the same release, keeping track of decisions is as crucial as making beautiful designs. That's when Jira started to make sense.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

The feature I probably appreciate the most isn’t really a feature at all, it’s visibility. If a design review gets delayed, a development work gets stopped, or a requirement changes, I don’t have to go ask three different people for an update. A glance at the project board will usually inform me of any changes, and whether they impact my work. That’s eliminated a fair number of pointless meetings. I like, too, that there is context for every design conversation. Looking back at a ticket weeks later I can usually tell why a certain interaction was accepted, changed, or denied. The historical setting has stopped me from having conversations t

What do you dislike most about this product?

Jira works best for teams that keep it simple. I’ve worked on projects with unique workflows, too many labels, too many issue kinds that make everyday work more complicated than it needs to be. In other instances, tracking tickets became a time drain that took away from doing genuine design work.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

Jira is not a creativity tool in my mind, and that’s okay. Its goal is to bring order, accountability and transparency to the product lifecycle. Having worked directly with technical and product teams, I’ve found that it creates uncertainty far less often than it alleviates it. It’s one of those platforms that becomes more beneficial, the more complicated your projects and teams develop, and it’s hard to imagine managing business UX projects without it today.

Pros

  • Helps Innovate
  • Trustworthy
  • Unique Features
  • Effective Service

Makes teamwork easier

Likeliness to Recommend

9 /10

What differentiates Jira from other similar products?

What I found different about Jira is that it helped keep everyone on the same page without needing so many status meetings. Most of the time, I could open a board and quickly see what was in progress, what was blocked, and what had already been completed. It made teamwork feel more organized and reduced a lot of the back and forth communication that usually happens during projects.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

What I like most is that Jira gives me a record of why something was done, not just what was done. There have been plenty of times when I needed to revisit an old task, and being able to see the discussions, decisions, and updates in one place saved me from having to ask around for context. That history becomes surprisingly valuable as projects get bigger and more people get involved.

What do you dislike most about this product?

One thing I don’t like is that it is easy for a project to become cluttered over time. As more tickets, labels, and workflows get added, finding the information you actually need can take longer than it should. I have seen projects where people spent more effort managing the process in Jira than working on the task itself.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

I will recommend spending a few weeks using Jira before making major customizations. I have seen teams invest a lot of time designing the perfect workflow only to realize later that their actual way of working was different. Starting simple helped us understand what we really needed, and the tool ended up supporting the team much better because the process evolved naturally instead of being forced from the start.
