What differentiates D2L Brightspace from other similar products?

It is more practical for content and classroom management, than, say, Google Classroom. This is primarily because D2L navigates like a traditional website (instead of being a series of cloud products glued together by a dashboard / home page). The app is not so ideal for mobile displays but its integration of assignments with the built-in dropbox folders for students to submit to and the ability for integrations (such as Panopto for video hosting and Turnitin for automatically checking submitted documents for plagiarism) make it a very good product for higher education to manage course content and homework submissions, feedback, & grading.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

The addition of the Brightspace Pulse mobile app is useful for students. It integrates with D2L allowing students to receive notifications about news, discussions, and upcoming assignments, and check their assignment calendars. Basically the app serves as a very beneficial reminder system for students who would tend to prefer push notifications and the ability to see assignments in one place than SMS or email notifications which are less legible and less viewed by most students.

What do you dislike most about this product?

Their content management is inconvenient for professors. They use flat file storage, which is fine, but they do not preserve file hierarchies when a folder containing many sub-folders and files is uploaded. Rather, if a professor uploads a folder with nested directories, the files get dumped in a flat manner and the professor has to waste time creating "folders" in D2L and moving files. Another problem is that characters like .,'` in a file name allow submission from Windows/Linux but are rejected from Macs. The error message says something like "Oops. File could not be uploaded" instead of simply saying "Try removing special characters".

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

D2L is overall a good product. There may be products with more convenient content management out there, and many professors do not like the rubric feature, but D2L has many good features. Compare it to Blackboard and Canvas and you may find that D2L's pricing just makes more sense.

  • Helps Innovate
  • Reliable
  • Performance Enhancing
  • Enables Productivity
