Commvault’s New CEO Will Move Forward by Driving Value From Your Backup Data

Sanjay Mirchandani is Commvault’s first new chief executive in two decades. We anticipate the new CEO will strengthen Commvault’s cloud data protection offerings in ways that leverage the company’s existing strengths in data management.

Mirchandani comes from Puppet, a popular infrastructure automation and orchestration solution. He replaces Bob Hammer, who has been Commvault’s CEO and Chairman since 1998. This changing of the guard is a major milestone for Commvault.

  • Many of the IT decision makers we speak with are looking to cloud services for data protection, an area where Mirchandani’s experience clearly stands out for Commvault’s Board. Consider the following from incoming Commvault Chairman, Nick Adamo: “Sanjay’s accomplishments at Puppet demonstrate a deep understanding of multi-cloud and cloud-native applications.”
  • Commvault has long offered strong data management capabilities – a strength that can be turbocharged on cloud services. In contrast to a traditional tendency of Infrastructure to think of storage as “undifferentiated bucket of bits,” Commvault solutions can access, categorize, and classify data in ways that enable data stores to be differentiated and managed.
  • Taken together, we expect to see solutions that drive value from secondary data, no matter which cloud it’s stored in.

Our Take

The future of backup is data management and cloud backups, and for Commvault, it’s only good news that they’ve secured a leader with credentials in cloud service automation. Expect Commvault’s new leadership to work toward delivering data protection solutions for multi-cloud and cloud-native applications in the future.
