What differentiates Slack from other similar products?
In terms of real impact on team productivity, it's quite noticeable because it greatly reduces the need for meetings or endless email chains. Quick conversations also help resolve doubts in minutes and keep everyone aligned on projects. It also greatly facilitates cross-departmental collaboration, since anyone can join a channel and get up to speed quickly. Another benefit is the transparency of decisions and discussions, which are documented in the channels. This helps prevent knowledge loss and allows new team members to integrate more quickly.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
As part of a team that constantly collaborates across different areas, what I like most about Slack is how easy it is to keep everyone connected without relying so heavily on email. The channels are incredibly helpful for organizing conversations by projects, teams, or specific topics, making it much easier to find information later. I also really appreciate the tool's speed; everything happens in real time, which helps with faster decision-making. Furthermore, the integration with other tools like task managers, calendars, and document platforms means that much of the work can be managed from a single place.
What do you dislike most about this product?
Honestly, there are times when it can become a bit overwhelming, especially when participating in many channels simultaneously, because notifications can accumulate quickly, and if they aren't configured properly, it's easy to lose focus on the work. I also feel that the search function could sometimes be more precise when trying to find very old messages or specific files within long conversations. And in large teams, keeping channels organized requires some discipline because otherwise too many are created, and it gets a bit chaotic.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
I would especially recommend it to teams that work collaboratively or remotely, where fast communication is key to moving projects forward. It's also very useful for companies that use many digital tools, due to the integrations, because these help centralize notifications and workflows. To get the most out of it, I think it's also important to establish some internal rules about how to use the channels, when to use direct messages, and how to manage notifications, because that makes a big difference in the daily experience.

A significant upgrade from email.

What differentiates Slack from other similar products?
It’s just better than email at internal comms because of the real-time aspect and the way that it organizes itself by topic (channel) rather than recipient. Email is for outside, formal communications; slack is for right now collaborative work. The channel format allows everyone who’s relevant to see the discussion — without infinite ’reply all’ loops.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
I really enjoy that when i send a message in a smaller channel i can click to see who has read my message. The custom status updates work perfectly to let people know when i’m on lunch or in a deep work block. The file sharing is speedy, and the capacity to comment directly on a shared file saves life in feedback loops. The mobile app’s ability to seamlessly toggle between my various client workspaces is a massive time saver.
What do you dislike most about this product?
There can be an adjustment period for less tech-savvy users to the channel-based communication, which they sometimes initially use like a group text. The size limit for file uploads can be a bottleneck in the case of high def videos or design files.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
I highly recommend slack to any team who feels like their internal communication is slow, disorganized and results in missed information. It is the structure it enforces that provides the greatest benefits.
