What differentiates Microsoft SharePoint from other similar products?

Having what is essentially the only tool on the market that gives us the audit trails we need in our industry, compliance is everything. Opposite of g-suite, where tracking changes is a little loose, sharepoint gives you very fine details on who did what when. It’s the best because it satisfies all our compliance needs while also being user-friendly so non-tech staffers can use it everyday. The data loss prevention features are a huge win for us.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

I especially like the news web part on homepages. It lets our leaders make posts that rank on things the employees actually see. With a fresh visual design, modern websites are extremely clean looking and can be proportionately scaled intofancy layouts. I also appreciate the onedrive integration and it allows for seamless transition of personal files and team related files. Similarly, the ability for users to have custom columns in files like "status" or "assigned to" is super useful for tracking.

What do you dislike most about this product?

It certainly is not a “plug and play” system. You have to stay on top of it and you really do need a person who knows what they are doing to get it set up correctly, or else it goes off the rails in a hurry.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

Sharepoint we adopted sharepoint 8 years ago, and organizations who are concerned with governance of their data should definitely be using it.

Pros

  • Performance Enhancing
  • Respectful
  • Over Delivered
  • Includes Product Enhancements

Cons

  • Commodity Features
  • Less Transparent
  • Leverages Incumbent Status

What differentiates Microsoft SharePoint from other similar products?

ever since we transitioned into hybrid work, sharepoint has been our spine. compared to how sloshy and unstable file sharing feels on slack, sharepoint feels sure and secure. it is the best because it maintains our file structure intact throughout the whole organization. we don’t have to worry about files disappearing when a user leaves the company, because it’s all still there in the site collection. it gives a level of stability that we really didn't have before.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

i think its really easy to share files with people externally to the organization. you have the option to age links out or to add a passcode, so transmitting big assets to clients is much more secure. the "check-out" and I also like because the people don't can make alterations when i do a overhaul large into of one document. it's a very rational way of managing team projects, and means that no work is accidentally overwritten at any time.

What do you dislike most about this product?

It also can be tricky to edit the navigation menu at the top. changing the layout and adding new links to the sidebar are a bit clunky (you can’t just access your blog from anywhere on tumblr and feel like you’re on “dashboard” it seems).

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

Need a secure and easy way to work with internal teams or clients- sharepoint is the best platform for you!

Pros

  • Reliable
  • Performance Enhancing

settings like site with lists and libraries is are really what makes sharepoint a powerful tool, vs something like confluence. we also use it as inventory management for hardware along our documents, something that most solutions don't provide natively. it’s the best is as it doubles up as a file server and lightweight database. the permission hierarchy is very fine grain (which allows our it department to sleep better at night managing external vendors or a temp contract employee).

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

i love the power automate integration. i created a flow which whenever a new file is uploaded to the “approvals” folder, i get a notification and am able to approve it with just one click. this has been such a timesaver for us. the document sets feature is also fantastic for keeping together related files as just one object. it’s these small power-user features that make the platform feel like a full workspace rather than just a place to dump stuff.

What do you dislike most about this product?

and  in some cases the web version can be slow and clunky if you are dealing with a massive library (say thousands of items). the page loading times are a huge letdown for sure.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

its a good option for medium–to-large companies whose work requires a powerful backend to support complicated flows with large amounts of sensitive corporate information.
