Cost-Effective and powerful 3D and NURBS modeller

Likeliness to Recommend

10 /10

What differentiates Rhino 8 from other similar products?

Rhino has established itself as a long-term reliable yet unique 3D CAD modeller. Especially Grasshopper broadens its usability tremendously, at a very competitive price-point against their competitors. Being available for Windows and macOS is also a standout strength. They also have a refreshing unique approach to licensing: permanent license, public beta from day 1, fixed and fair upgrade pricing from any old version, no enforced subscription, no forced yearly updates and allowing commercial usage even for educational users. A 4-year timespan between major upgrades is also less disruptive to business than many competitors.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

Since they ported their software to macOS and included Grasshopper, the software remains a very valuable and efficient toolkit: open ended, ready to be customised or expanded, reliable toolset and not following hype trends: they know their strengths and have a strong focus to add value where they can deliver: powerful 3D NURBS and Mesh modelling and manipulation, parametric design with Grasshopper, a large eco-system of extensions, open API and supporting add-ins, scripting, multiple programming languages. Accompanied with a large range of supported import/export formats makes it fit well in many scenarios.

What do you dislike most about this product?

Not much. The few times operations fail are typically edge cases, or lack of user understanding of the geometric task at hand. It may become a bit sluggish when loading very complex and large CAD files, e.g., detailed DWG floor plans or very large non-native models. They don't market very aggressively, so many Autodesk users ignore them or believe that Dynamo is completely invented by Autodesk, whereas you can clearly trace it to Grasshopper (and indirectly Bentley Generative Components).

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

There is a generous trial period and a toolset that is familiar for users of competing CAD software, such as AutoCAD. But play with its unique aspects mostly: Grasshopper parametric design. Rhino.inside is a surprisingly powerful and effective way where Rhino becomes an embedded toolkit in other software, such as Revit. It would be nice to have this kind of integration inside Archicad, but the Rhino/Grasshopper connection for Archicad is a valid alternative as well.

Pros

  • Enables Productivity
  • Unique Features
  • Caring
  • Respectful

Cons

  • Less Efficient Service

Rhinoceros 8 CAD software is integral to me

Likeliness to Recommend

10 /10

What differentiates Rhino 8 from other similar products?

The Rhino 8 modeling engine is my go-to for when I am using the MatrixGold plugin by Gemvision to create custom jewelry. Software integration is very important to my workflow. Rhino is pretty fast, making it faster than most CAD software.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

My favorite aspect of Rhino 8 is that I can depend on it to create sophistocated or difficult models that appear organic. There are many tools within the engine that allow me full creative flexibility and I know my jewelry designs will come out exactly the way I want them to.

What do you dislike most about this product?

The price is the only downfall at almost $6k, but you get what you pay for. As a work tool, it is an important business expense. Professional tools are pricy.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

Buy the product even if it seems challening at first, there is so much free training available online. If you are looking for the fastest way to design jewelry and have it casted properly, Rhino 8 is the only choice.

Pros

  • Helps Innovate
  • Reliable
  • Performance Enhancing
  • Inspires Innovation
