Row-Level Security Shows People Only Their Data

Likeliness to Recommend

8 /10

What differentiates Microsoft Power BI from other similar products?

I built a dashboard for our 20 regional managers. I wanted each manager to only be able to see the data for their own region. I used row-level security (rls) to do this.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

It's an amazing feature. Everyone goes to the same report, but the data is automatically filtered for them. The manager for the north region only sees north data. It's secure and it makes the report less overwhelming for them.

What do you dislike most about this product?

Setting up rls is very complicated. You have to write dax rules for each role, and then assign people to those roles in the power bi service. It's a very advanced feature and it's easy to make a mistake.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

If you need to share one report with many different people, but they should all see different data, rls is the perfect solution.

Pros

  • Performance Enhancing
  • Enables Productivity
  • Altruistic
  • Friendly Negotiation

Cons

  • Less Effective Service
  • Vendor's Interest First

What differentiates Microsoft Power BI from other similar products?

other bi tools have a hard time with excel. power bi is the best because it is a microsoft product, so it works perfectly with excel, which is the most important data tool in our company.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

i love that i can connect to an excel file, and when i update the numbers in my spreadsheet, i just have to click "refresh" in power bi and my whole dashboard updates automatically. it is so simple.

What do you dislike most about this product?

the desktop application can be very slow and uses a lot of my computer's memory, especially if my report has a lot of data.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

if your company runs on excel, there is no better business intelligence tool than power bi.

Robust and efficient

Likeliness to Recommend

10 /10

What differentiates Microsoft Power BI from other similar products?

Microsoft Power BI stands out for its deep integration with the Microsoft ecosystem (Excel, Azure, Teams), strong self-service analytics, affordability, and powerful data modelling with DAX. Its ease of use for non-technical users and tight Power Platform connectivity (Power Apps, Power Automate) makes it ideal for both business users and developers.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

My favourite aspect of Microsoft Power BI is its seamless integration with Excel and other Microsoft tools, which makes data analysis, sharing, and collaboration intuitive—especially for users already familiar with the Microsoft ecosystem.

What do you dislike most about this product?

What I dislike most about Microsoft Power BI is the complexity involved in managing large data models and DAX formulas, which can be challenging for new users. Additionally, limited real-time data refresh and inconsistent performance with complex visuals can hinder smooth dashboard experiences in enterprise environments.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

Ensure your team is trained in DAX and data modelling for best results. Take advantage of its integration with Microsoft tools like Excel and Teams. Start with Pro or free versions before scaling to Premium. Plan your data sources and refresh strategy early and consider using Power BI with Power Automate for advanced automation.

Pros

  • Helps Innovate
  • Continually Improving Product
  • Reliable
  • Unique Features
