Webroot Antivirus 6.0
Webroot Antivirus is great at removing viruses and spyware, and now comes with a bonus free Firewall application and free online file storage to back up your files and access them from anywhere.
The antivirus system has won top industry awards from West Coast Labs and ICSA Labs. It has also received a VB100 Award for its ease of use and effective removal of malicious threats. Bundled with the award-winning Spy Sweeper, Webroot may be the all-in-one solution for removing viruses, spyware, rootkits, worms, and other threats, but I would not rely too heavily on its ability to block new spyware from entering.
When testing on our heavily infected system, Webroot was astonishing at cleaning up installed viruses and spyware. It successfully identified and removed nearly 97% of all known viruses and removed or blocked nearly 100% of our malware programs. Compared to other antivirus products in the same price range, Webroot is right at the top for removing threats.
The Spy Sweeper antispyware application is effective at filtering web content it deems to be malicious. It allows for uninterrupted gaming and browsing, yet we were not thoroughly impressed as it still let in about 25% of malware, sometimes allowing it to run in the background until I had to force it out manually. One redeeming thing about the Spy Sweeper shields are that if the malware does intrude past the defenses, it is extremely capable at blocking it from starting up the next time or if you inadvertently open something with “helper” applications it gets burned immediately by Webroot’s powerful shield system. So suffice to say, it is great at overall stopping many threats from infesting your system, but you will need to periodically run the scans to remove them because it does let a lot slip through.
Webroot now comes with a free download (and separate installation) of their Firewall program. While the Firewall is basic and not very effective, it is still another way to protect your system. It can be kind of a pain in the neck at first, as it tries to run in training mode for the first few days, shooting several annoying pop-ups to your screen. The training mode can be shut off, but for a basic user it can be troublesome. You may not really need this Firewall, it does add some extra security however. For advanced users you will need to play with the settings and make sure you block all ports, the version we installed did not block everything.
Webroot’s customer support is excellent. We had no problem getting through on the phone to them, and there is plenty of online support and resources.
Updates are done daily or hourly. VersionGuard® ensures your protection is always current by automatically installing the latest threat definitions and free updates as soon as they are released.
Make sure you also take advantage of the free 1GB of free online storage as part of the package. Many other standalone antivirus packages do not offer this, and if you do not already use a file storage site like Send6 or DropSend, this can be a great way to keep files safe.
